How We Built It

An exposed fieldstone wall, a dark beam, and a basement that became a room.

1 · Tear-out. Every basement has a surprise behind the paneling.

Is that... stone?

A wall? Since when?

Mind the nails.

CRRRACK!
2 · Clean-up. Decades of dust. Very committed dust.

Loose mortar goes. Tight mortar stays.

Somebody has to carry the bucket.

SCRRRTCH
3 · Repointing. Mortar goes in the joints, not in your hair.

Pack it in. Don't smear it.

Smeared is a crime. I've seen it.

SQUISH
4 · Beam & drywall. The beam goes up. Everyone stands very still.

On three. One... two...

You said "on three" at two.

HEAVE!
5 · Finishing. Paint, trim, a light. The stone does the talking.

Gray. It's called "greige" now.

Don't step here. Ask me how I know.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one's a photo. The paneling scenes are dramatized.

Turns out the basement had good bones.

Nice beam.
