How We Built It

Large-format bathroom floor tile and a floating vanity, in six panels.

1 · Layout. Find the center of the room. Then find it again.

Walls are never square.

So the tile has to be.

SNAP!
2 · Prep. Big tile forgives nothing, least of all a floor that isn't flat.

Flat. I said flat.

Define “flat.”

WHIRRR
3 · First tile. Thinset on the floor and the tile. Trust issues.

Back-butter it, too.

Ridges all one way.

SQUELCH
4 · Field tile. Every tile gets checked. All of them.

Mind the lippage.

Measure twice. Cut once. Breathe.

5 · Grout. Straight joints and a floating vanity. Nobody walk on that floor.

Please don't walk on it.

Give it a day.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one's a photo. The floor is the star.

Go on. Drop a marble.
