How We Built It

A bluestone patio, from bare lawn to finished stone, in six panels.

1 · Layout. Spray paint is the first draft.

Is it square?

Ask the string.

PSSHT THWACK!
2 · Excavate. The patio you see depends on the hole you don't.

Dig it right and nobody thinks about it.

Dirt weighs more than you'd think.

Roots. Always roots.

SCHRUNK
3 · Base. Unglamorous. Essential.

It hums. I feel it in my teeth.

Flat. Flatter. Better.

BRRRR
4 · Setting stone. A jigsaw puzzle nobody wants to solve twice.

Heavier than it looks.

Tap. Check. Tap.

TOK TOK
5 · Cut & sweep. Edges get cut, joints get sand, everyone gets dusty.

Off by a hair. Unacceptable.

Sweep, sweep.

Water's what makes it stick.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this is a photo. The lawn is also real.

Worth the dig.

Now, furniture.
