How We Built It

A long brick driveway, in six panels.

1 · Layout. A driveway starts as string, stakes and a slope.

Water runs downhill.

Stakes in. Opinions out.

THWACK!
2 · Base. Everything you admire later sits on something nobody sees.

Nobody sees the base. Everybody feels it.

More gravel. Then more gravel.

BRRRRR
3 · Curbing. Granite holds the driveway in and the lawn out.

Granite weighs what it weighs.

Left. No, my left.

CLUNK
4 · Sand bed. A screed board turns a pile of sand into a very flat pile of sand.

Level. Not almost level.

Sand has no opinions. Good.

SHHHK
5 · Bricks. Herringbone interlocks, so it stays put.

Straight lines were too easy.

Measure twice. The brick only gets cut once.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one’s a photo. Nobody drew the trees.

Worth every brick.

Now do the neighbor’s.
