How We Built It

A backyard paver patio with a fire pit, in six panels.

1 · Dig. Removing a lot of yard to make room for a better one.

Deeper than you’d think.

Straight lines. Paint doesn’t lie.

CHUNK SHHHK
2 · Base. Crushed stone, compacted. Unglamorous. Load-bearing.

Gravel. So much gravel.

It does the shouting.

BRRRRT
3 · Sand & screed. The flattest thing we’ll ever build. Nobody will thank it.

Level means level. Not “level-ish.”

Bubble says no. Again.

SHHHK
4 · Pavers. One at a time, in a pattern, for a while.

Staggered joints. Not optional.

Next.

Plenty more where these came from.

TAP TAP
5 · Fire pit. Cut, stack, sweep. Then argue about where the chairs go.

Measure twice. Wear the glasses.

Level. Then level again.

Sand: joints only.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one’s a photo. The fire pit is the square in the middle.

Now it just needs a fire.

Chairs are your department.
