How We Built It

A fieldstone and granite front stoop, in six panels.

1 · Layout. Step one: agree where the ground stops and the stairs start.

Same rise on every step.

Same run, too.

Nobody trips.

THWACK!
2 · Base. Nobody sees the footing. Everybody feels it.

Tamp it again.

It was flat a minute ago.

THUMP
3 · Stonework. Every stone is a puzzle. None of them read the instructions.

This one fits.

You said that about the last six.

CRACK!
4 · Granite. The treads are the only part anyone actually touches.

Down. Down. DOWN.

My left. Your left.

CLUNK
5 · Finishing. Planters go on last. Somebody has to make it look like a home.

Third pot. Still heavy.

Do not walk on my joints.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one's a photo. The rest was mostly accurate.

Every riser the same. Go ahead, count.

Nobody trips.
