How We Built It

A fieldstone retaining wall, in six panels.

1 · Layout. The hill wants to move. The wall has other plans.

Wall goes here.

The hill disagrees.

THWACK!
2 · Footing. Gravel first. Water is the real enemy.

Frost line is below us.

Tamp it. Then tamp it again.

THUMP
3 · Stonework. Every stone has a good face. Finding it takes a while.

Good face out.

That is the back.

THUNK
4 · Mortar & backfill. Neat joints out front. Gravel out back.

Joints. Neat. Please.

It is mortar. Not soup.

SHHK
5 · Cap & planting. The cap sheds water. The daylilies hide the rest.

Smooth. Smoother.

Daylilies. Very forgiving.

6 · The real thing. Yes, this one is a photo. The hill stayed put.

It is holding.

Told you.
